“Nobody can say yet unequivocally whether Bulgaria and Romania will be among the countries that will join NATO first and be invited at the Prague summit,” Richard Cohen, former senior officer in NATO headquarters, and associate of George Marshall Center for Security Studies, said, quoted by BBC. He said he is moderately optimistic about Bulgaria’s joining NATO because of the good will NATO officials demonstrate towards Bulgaria.

Among Bulgaria’s successful developments Richard Cohen pointed out the macroeconomic stability the country has achieved. He conceded that Bulgaria’s coupling with Romania is not to its advantage since Romania still continues to lag behind on many issue. It is however very unlikely that the two countries will be treated separately because of political reasons.

Bulgarian parliamentary delegation is on a three-day visit to Germany, where Bulgarian and Romanian MPs will take part in a conference, organized by the Marshall Center. The meeting aims to inform the representatives of the two NATO candidate states on the Parliament’s role in the national security policy, the main principles of the country’s defense budget planning and the relations between civil and military institutions in the USA and Germany.
