Hundreds of thousands of people are said to be fleeing in panic after lava from volcanic eruptions engulfed the town of Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Eyewitnesses said huge areas of Goma were ablaze after a massive lava flow from the nearby Mount Nyiragongo cut the town in two. Most of the town's inhabitants poured out towards the Rwandan border, jamming the crossing at Gisenyi. No casualties have been reported, but it is feared some people may have been caught by surprise by the speed of the advancing flames.
