A procedure for assessing the life expectancy of Units 3 and 4 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, launched in July 2000, is to be completed in April 2002, the Plant Decommissioning Department announced. The procedure is implemented under an agreement with a consortium comprising Framatome ANP GmbH of Germany, Siemens of Germany, and Atomstroyexport of Russia. It is part of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s mission (May-June 2002) in connection with the ongoing plant decommissioning negotiations with the European Union. According to the results available so far Units 3 and 4 can operate until 2010 and 2012 respectively. In November 1999 Bulgaria and the European Commission reached an agreement that Units 1 and 2 are to be decommissioned by 2003, and that the deadline for Units 3 and 4 should be negotiated in 2002.
