Many a Sofia citizens gathered downtown on Sunday as the Chinese are celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year with firecrackers and dragon dances.

The Chinese zodiac is based on a 12-year cycle with each year represented by an animal. January 29, 2006 marks the start of the year of the Dog, which will last for 385 days until February 17, 2007.

People born in the Year of the Dog are said to possess a deep sense of loyalty and honesty. They inspire other people's confidence because they know how to keep secrets and make good leaders. Among the celebrities born in the Year of the Dog are Sharon Stone, Mariah Carey, Brigitte Bardot, George W. Bush, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Spielberg, Madonna Ciccone, Michael Jackson.

In Sofia, practitioners of the controversial Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, marked the setting in of the Year of the Dog with demonstrations of the ancient meditation practice and protests against the Chinese communist regime restrictions of the freedom of belief.

China outlawed Falun Gong's practice in 1999. According to the Falun Dafa Information Center, in the last six years, hundreds of thousands have been arrested and over 3,000 tortured to death.
