FEW GENETICALLY MODIFIED PLANTINGS IN BULGARIA, REPORT READS

There had been modest growth in commercial genetically modified (GM) plantings in Bulgaria, a report of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA) reads. According to the monitoring body the world area under cultivation has exploded more than 30-fold since 1996 despite widespread consumer concerns over transgenic crops. 5.5 million farmers in 13 countries around the world now are growing the new strains. The GM world continues to be dominated by the United States with a crop area of 35.7 million hectares in 2001, 68 percent of the global total. By comparison few GM crops were still grown in Europe, where public opinion, bruised by food scares from mad cow disease to dioxin poisoning, has been sceptical of the new varieties. ISAAA noted.
