Survival of the Fittest

A drunk man gets home crawling. His wife stands menacingly next to the front door.

"Honey, me and my friends decided to have drinking competition to check who would drink the most," he stutters, trying to excuse himself in front of the furious lady.

"Sounds interesting," she replies. "So, who ranked second?"

Well, from now on angry Bulgarian wives, or at least those from the coastal city of Varna will not have to ask this question. Rather, they will be most glad to have their husbands crawling on all fours past the front door in the wee hours. These women will be exceptionally happy to see their men staggering along, clothes torn and dirty, displaying black eyes and a few bumps. For they will be blessed should their husbands end up alive after an evening of massive liquor session at the round-the-corner pub.

The reason for ameliorating the negative outcome of returning home dead drunk to find a furious wife armed with hard objects and harsh words is far for complex. Bulgaria's sea capital Varna has recently witnessed a number of death cases after poor quality
liquor poisoning. These have not been limited to men only, though, as methanol is known to cause similar effects regardless of gender differences.

Naturally, Varna police launched a raid on sites for open alcohol sale. A number of storehouses, shops and sheds have been checked because of the increasing cases of methanol poisoning. However, no clear picture of the situation has emerged so far.

And as winter holidays are approaching, the state of alcohol affairs is getting even more critical. Around Christmas and New Year's Bulgarians are known to consume more liquor than at any other time during the year. Thus, the risk of bad liquor poisoning scores pretty high.

So, with view to all said above, Bulgarians still willing to plunge into the depths of methanol might want to raise their glasses and remind themselves of the old refrain themselves we are a nation of survivors, after all.
