Iran's President Mohammad Khatami invited the Bulgarian President to visit Iran, it emerged after the meeting of Foreign Minister Passy with Khatami. Foreign Minister Passy conveyed greetings to Khatami on behalf of Bulgarian Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, incumbent President Petur Stoyanov and President-elect Parvanov. Iran's President expressed the hope that the relations between Bulgaria and Iran will improve. Minister Passy also had talks with his Iranian counterpart Kamal Kharazi. During the talks, it was discussed how Bulgaria can assist Iran in its capacity of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The joint efforts and measures to be taken by the two states in their combat against drugs trafficking and Afghan's reconstruction were also discussed. Kharazi told Passy that the ethnic tolerance in Bulgaria has always been acknowledged and that Bulgaria is in the right direction, striving towards EU accession and that will not in any way harm Bulgaria's relations with Iran. "This is a very important visit after so many years," Kharazi told Bulgarian journalists, emerging from the meeting, which took longer than scheduled. Foreign Minister Passy left for a three-day visit to Iran on January 4. This is the first official visit of a Bulgarian foreign minister to Iran for the last ten years.
