VAT INTRODUCTION ON MEDICINES MAY BE POSTPONED WITH THREE MONTHS

Business | January 4, 2002, Friday // 00:00

Three-month grace period for calculation of the new prices of the medicines is to be introduced by the Cabinet, according to an agreement between Bozhidar Finkov, Health Care minister and the medicine traders and pharmacists. Finkov promised to lobby for the VAT introduction postponement. On January 4, the pharmacists’ union and the chamber of the medicines traders lodged a complaint with the Supreme Administrative Court against the Cabinet's decree N 300 dealing with the fixation of medicines ceiling prices. The pharmacists protest against the 20% VAT introduction on medicines. Currently the medicine market in Bulgaria is blocked, since many pharmacies closed down. There are no grounds for anxiety, Deputy Finance Minister Atanas Katsarchev said at a press conference. According to him the closing of pharmacies springs from misunderstanding the scheme of VAT fixation, while the prices of medicines will go up by no more than 9-10%.
