The National Border Police Service (NBPS) has requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to urge the Turkish authorities to strengthen the protection of the two countries' common border in order to stop illegal migration, the NBPS Director, Colonel Valeri Grigorov said.

The Bulgarian side is taking serious protection measures for the border section near Svilengrad to curb illegal migration from Turkey via Bulgaria to Western Europe, Grigorov explained.

The stricter measures involve an increase in border patrols. A group of border police officers from other areas have been transferred to Svilengrad, and another 40-strong unit will be transferred January 7, he said.

In November 2000 the NBPS started repairing border protection installations. In 2001, installations covering 118 km of the national border were repaired and are now in operation.

Despite the bad weather and the deep snow cover, the NBPS is prepared to take additional border protection measures if necessary, Grigorov pointed out.
