Every second Bulgarian disapproves of the political events in Bulgaria since the fall of communism in November 1989, a survey, conducted by Bulgarian polling agency Alpha Research, shows. 33% say the political changes did not affect their lives, while 17% feel optimistic. Asked with whom they associate the idea for a better life, 60% of the respondents answer that there is no such personality. According to the results most people believe that Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg and President-elect Georgi Parvanov, who is to take office on January 22, are the people who can change the country’s development for the better. Parvanov’s rate of approval rose form 2% in 2000 to 16% at the end of 2001. The support for the Prime Minister rose to 13%. President Petar Stoyanov and Sofia mayor Stefan Sofianski received 3%, while former Prime Minister Ivan Kostov and former foreign Minister Nadezhda Mihaylova – 1% approval rate. People living in small towns and the pensioners are among the most dissatisfied with the transitional period Bulgaria goes through. Opinions diverge according to the different ethnic groups as well. The causes for this slight fall in optimism and confidence can be attributed to political, social and economic factors, sociologists comment. Respondents from the Roma minority register the highest level of pessimism – 70%. Students and citizens in the capital Sofia turned out to be more optimistic than usual. Experts comment that this must come as no surprise since those who found the situation in Bulgaria hopeless already left the country.
