PHARMACIES STARTED TO CLOSE DOWN

Starting from January 1, many pharmacies closed down as a consequence of the governmental decision to increase prices of medicines. Hundreds of people suffering from chronic diseases, who are entitled to have medicines free of charge, toured the pharmacies of Sofia in vain. The pharmacies that stayed open sold medicines at their old prices in spite of the introduction of 20% VAT on January 1, 2002. On January 3, the pharmacists expect an official order from the Health Ministry to introduce higher prices. The medicines went officially up with 3% to 9%, starting from January 1. The Cabinet decreed the increase on December 21.
