“The two most significant events that 2002 will bring us are the meeting of NATO-member states in Prague in November and the fate of the Bulgarian medics in Libya, “ Foreign Minister Passy said. According to Minister Passy the ice in the relations between Sofia and Tripoli has already been broken. He expressed his optimism for a favourable outcome of the trial. In his opinion the most tangible aim should be the exclusion of death sentences from the list of possible outcomes at the hearing on February 17. The Bulgarian medics are charged with intentionally infecting 393 Libyan children with HIV virus. The next hearing of the case is scheduled for February 17 after it was postponed on December 22. Passy is certain Bulgaria will made considerable progress in the coming year. He pointed out that Bulgaria managed to open and close one additional chapter to those planned in its negotiations with the European Union. “Our foreign policy is not something abstract, it will lead to improving the living standard of all Bulgarians,” Minister Passy concluded.
