Sofia University, the oldest in Bulgaria, opened its doors for the start of the academic year for the 117th time Monday.

Dean Boyan Biolchev held the commencement speech before 4,000 new students. They were initiated into the world of knowledge with a special ceremony prepared by an amateur group of actors.

The actors with books on their heads symbolizing knowledge drew commas on the hands of the newly accepted. The commas resembled a rotated number six - the highest grade in Bulgaria's educational system.

Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister - Daniel Valchev also witnessed the ceremony.

Universities all over the country gave start of the new academic year.
