Thracian rock sanctuary Perperikon turned out to be Thrace's first capital by the name of Pergamos claim the archaeologists that study the digs.

Pergamos is the oldest known Thracian town of Cretan- Mycenaean times, archaeologists told Bulgarian National Radio. It is a thousand years older than the findings from the Valley of Thracian Kings near Bulgaria's city Kazanlak.

A south gate of the fortress built out of massive stone blocks each weighing several tons is the excavators' proof that they have indeed unearthed the ancient Pergamos built as early as fourteenth century BC. This was the most powerful fortress of Thracian times, and it had four doors, three of which were discovered this summer.

Never has so well kept a fortress been uncovered in Bulgaria, archaeologists state.

Last year Bulgarian scientists revealed the ancient name of the grandiose religious center - Perperikon thus unveiling one of the deepest secrets of the ancient world. The complex is known for the many historical treasures hidden in its lands.
