The world marks with special events September 16 the International Day of Preservation of the Ozone Layer to remind the world to do its share in preserving life on the planet.

Several seminars on ozone science, that will be open to the public and will feature leading international experts, will be held in Vienna and Paris, award ceremonies will bring recognition to diplomats and scientist in Austria and China. The United States celebrate under this year's theme "Sun Safety Summit for Skin Cancer Prevention".

A seasonal decrease or hole was first discovered by scientists in 1985 in the ozone layer above the Antarctica and was the first confirmation of a thinning of the layer.

Two years later, in 1987, representatives from 24 nations met in Montreal to announce to the world that the time had come to stop destroying the ozone layer. This decision would be known as the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and the September 16 as the International Day of Preservation of the ozone layer.
