Rightists United: Bulgaria's New SciFi

A young Bulgarian schoolboy was assigned a homework on the establishment of democracy in the country. He went home and asked his dad how democracy arrived in Bulgaria.

The father, an unemployed middle-aged man, scratched his balding forehead and after some thinking, he answered, "Well, you see, son, our dissident right-wingers united to succeed in toppling Communism and establishing a democratic state."

The boy was satisfied by the answer and went to the local library to look for scholarly literature on the topic. He walked up to the front desk and vehemently told the chief librarian,"I need a book on the success of Bulgaria's united right-wingers!"

"It's in the Science Fiction section," the librarian replied unmoved.

This little anecdote fairly effectively describes the deep fracture Bulgaria's formerly united right-wingers have suffered in the last couple of years. Indeed, what further proof that partition has brought rightists nothing but failure than a left-centrist cabinet with a Socialist for Bulgaria's PM?

Still, a tiny bit of hope has emerged on the gloomy rightist horizon. Earlier this week four of Bulgaria's leading right-wing parties agreed on a common nomination for a Sofia mayor. It does not take a 160 IQ to realize that the divide-and-conquer strategy has had a negative effect on rightist electorate. Alas, right-wingers have been too busy arguing, which one of them actually brought democracy to Bulgaria in 1989 to fathom that a number of their tired adherents have actually transferred to the other camps.

Nonetheless, a slight chance to save the sinking rightist ship might still exist, for the position of Sofia mayor is of major importance in Bulgaria. However, this challenging mission requires strong leadership. And such is missing.

Of course, there's former PM and ultra-rightist Ivan Kostov, who, god knows why, has been regarded a s a highly charismatic person. Yet Kostov has now his own ship (or rather barge) to save from sinking and has made it clear he does not intend to drown along with the pack.

And so, while some forces look for architects and liberals to nominate in the mayor race, others unite in an attempt to transfer from the Science Fiction to the Modern History section of Bulgaria's library.

Whether they will succeed depends on their good will. Or the lack of it, for that matter.
