Pets: Help a Depressed Cat

Society | September 9, 2005, Friday // 00:00

It may come as a surprise to many cat owners that these animals can get depressed for pretty much the same reasons as humans.

Major changes in the family - for example a divorce, a new childbirth or the death of a family member - can disrupt the cat's feeling of comfort and safety. Also, if your daily routine changes in a way that keeps you from spending as much time with the pet, it is likely to start feeling lonely.

A poor died, lack of physical exercise or boredom can also trigger cat depression.

To avoid this, make sure you spend one-to-one time with your fluffy friend every day. Let it sit in your lap while watching television, pamper him/ her by gently brushing its fur and thus giving it a pleasant massage.

If you think you could care for another pet, get yourself a hamster or an aquarium with fishes. The sight will entertain the cat.

Another good idea is to make a window perch where the cat can lie comfortably and watch the world outside.
