Bulgarian Tourists Embark on Festive Climb

More than one hundred associations, members of the Bulgarian tourist union, joined the celebrations of the Day of Tourism, marked each year on the last Sunday of August.

The celebrations date back to August 1895 when the Bulgarian writer Aleko Konstantinov became the initiator of an adventurous pilgrimage from the centre of present-day Sofia up to the highest peak on Mt Vitosha, Cherni Vruh.

Aleko Konstantinov, a master-hand publicist and humorist, known mainly for his short novel "Bay Ganyo", was joined by three hundred enthusiasts. He embarked on the emblematic climb after publishing his feuilleton "An invitation to Sofia lovers of Bulgarian nature".

This year the celebrations were held under the patronage of President Georgi Parvanov.
