Science: Europe Ponders on Mars Robot

Europe's latest plans for landing on Mars are fixed on a single rover robot, the BBC reported Thursday.

The craft is planned to leave in June 2011, and reach Mars in June 2013.

A mission concept from the British team behind Beagle 2 is no longer on the table, the media said.

According to the report, the European Space Agency (ESA) would hold a two-day meeting in the Netherlands next week. Scientists will discuss what experiments the craft should take to the Red Planet.

The robot will most probably search for traces of present or past life.

The planned mission is part of the Aurora programme for exploration of the Solar System, namely Mars, the Moon, and the asteroids.
