New Ministers Take Office

Novinite Insider » INTERVIEW | August 16, 2005, Tuesday // 00:00

Almost two months after Bulgaria's general elections and one failed attempt to form a government, a cabinet formed by the country's socialists, centrists and ethnic Turks was installed Tuesday.

Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev, backed by 168 of the 235 lawmakers who voted, became Bulgaria's new Prime Minister. A total of 67 MPs opposed Stanishev's candidacy.

The 40th National Assembly approved the structure of the new Cabinet with a 169-67 vote, in which a total of 236 MPs participated. 169 lawmakers approved the line-up of the Cabinet, while 68 opposed it. Ministerial seats have been distributed 8:5:3 among the Bulgarian Socialist Party, the centrist Simeon II National Movement and the predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms respectively.

The new ministers swore in minutes after the vote and celebrated the new Cabinet over champagne and red roses.

Below are the statements some of Bulgaria's new ministers made after they took office.
