The Sum of All Seats

More than a month after the general elections in Bulgaria, the country's political situation has come to resemble a Hollywood thriller. Heroes and anti-heroes, dangerous situations, unexpected twists-nothing essential to a sappy blockbuster has been missing.

The first mandate to form a government has failed. Plans for the third are underway, although the second one has neither been handed nor refused. Potential coalition partners have been running down slippery slopes and playing tricks on each other.

To further prove the point, several years ago a US movie called "The Sum of All Fears" appeared on the big screen. "27, 000 Nuclear Weapons, One Is Missing," its slogan said. The movie co-starred Hollywood celebs Ben Afleck and Morgan Freeman as well as a bunch of other famous actors.

Transferring the above-mentioned details to Bulgaria's political milieu, several points can be made.

First, the slogan of Bulgaria's political movie should be: "Seven Parliamentary Forces. Coalition is Missing." A movie's slogan might be best described as a short statement of its plot. Needless to explain, the plot depicts a battle for securing a certain number of seats in parliament, abundantly spiced up with lies, action scenes and maybe even sex.

Following this line of thought, one cannot but agree that the most appropriate title for the blockbuster would be The Sum of All Seats. Then, the issue of choosing the cast appears.

However, in Bulgaria's case things, as usual, have taken a reverse course. The country has made its choice of actors on June 25, which has caused a boatload of complications.

While competition for the main, and largely the only female part--that of cute Bridget Moynahan, has been largely limited, Afleck's character, has been much vied. One contender has even succeeded in getting it, only to be able to keep it for about five hours.

Thus, the production of Bulgaria's all-time blockbuster has continued with the prospect of the country's audiences queuing in front of box offices in the fall as the most likely outcome. And if that happens, a new slogan, borrowed from another famous movie, based on an even more famous novel, can be employed--"You remember how to whistle don't you? Just put your lips together...and blow."
