Novinite Insider » INTERVIEW | August 4, 2005, Thursday // 00:00

Bulgaria's minority coalition government, proposed by election winners Socialist Coalition for Bulgaria and the predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), failed to be elected in Parliament last week. Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev was narrowly chosen prime minister before the vote on his draft cabinet failed.

Under the country's constitution, the second-largest parliamentary force, Simeon II National Movement, is to receive the second cabinet formation mandate. The centrist party has approached all parliamentary forces on the possibilities for a future coalition. They have also held consultations with June 25 greatest surprise, nationalist coalition Attack (Ataka), whose fourth-largest vote has been regarded as worrying by a number of experts.

In case the second mandate fails, President Georgi Parvanov will have to choose whom to hand the third one. The failure of the last mandate will result in early elections.

Sofia News Agency reporter Despina Koleva approached members of all seven Bulgarian parliamentary forces with questions on the prospects for government formation.
