Stanishev, Dogan-Salsa Time

The much-disputed fact has already become a political reality. Coalition partners Sergey Stanishev and Ahmed Dogan have become a couple. A dance couple, that is.

To shed more light on the issue, in a recent attempt to educate me on the subtleties of Salsa, a friend of mine lectured me on the mechanics of dancing in couples. "You see, in Salsa it doesn't matter how good the woman is. If the man can't dance well, she'll never be able to demonstrate her abilities," the Latin dance devotee told me.

And while back then I didn't much care about this simple law, it has recently haunted my mind's troubled attempts to reason out who is who in Bulgaria's government-to-be.

Since Tuesday dance partners have become clear. Socialist leader Stanishev and predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) Head, Dogan have emerged as an inseparable couple. Or so it can be concluded from MRF lawmaker Yunal Lyutfi's vows that his party will remain faithful to last week's intended dance configuration.

By disputing every inch of ground concerning Stanishev's participation in a Simeon II National Movement-led coalition government, Dogan's party has made the couple legitimate.

Still, one question has remained-who is to play the man's part in the winning or not so winning configuration?

Obviously, many have been deliberating on the issue. A variety of experts have claimed Dogan will hold Stanishev captive. While I don't favor hostage-taking practices, I cannot but agree that the former has danced with many. That is not to say the latter lacks dance skills, but he might well be suited for a career in some other dance category.

Further, experience has shown Dogan's are contest-winning couples-he has changed partners to secure victory. Therefore, sound reason suggests he might well actually be suited to perform the male part in Salsa. If that be the case, the Socialist has nothing left but to let his partner take the lead and follow him amid hopes for a chance to be able demonstrate whatever abilities he possesses. Whether Stanishev will resign to a secondary position, however, remains to be seen.

Still, a troublesome aspect has emerged. Salsa, as mentioned above, requires couples. However, it has become obvious that a couple possesses negative chances for success on the Bulgarian political dance floor. Furthermore, another major dancer has so far made it clear that he regards a broader dance team as more likely to win the contest. Therefore, the Stanishev-Dogan couple night want to consider whether it is indeed a Salsa competition they have rushed into.
