Pulling Tricks to Hang On

Bulgaria's Socialist Party usually saves all the key posts for tried and trusted partymen.

Sunday saw a surprisingly large-hearted approach to the assigning of ministerial posts.

The SP put forward democrat Plamen Oresharski and SIINM's Dimitar Kalchev. The latter was not even informed about plans to nominate him for State Administration Minister. Oresharski's nomination for head of the key Finance Ministry was just as surprising.

Sergey Stanishev and his mates have apparently decided to sacrifice two Cabinet seats in order to draw support from some of the democrats and the King's party members. Which is just one more indication that the Socialists and their partner Movement for Rights and Freedom (MRF) are insecure that their draft will pull through.

It's a touch-and-go project, now depending on whether a secret vote will be allowed.

It also remains unclear whether the Oresharski-Kalchev bait will really gain some extra support.

Several months ago, few people would have guessed that it would be such hardness for the Socialist party to claim state power.

But the leftist party did not garner enough votes in the general election to govern on their own. The war of nerves with the Simeon II National Movement then left Stanishev in an unfavorable position.

The young and rather inexperienced leader was left with little time to draw a successful Plan B.

His latest move seems like a sign of insecurity. Who will come out as a winner in the end?

Will Stanishev manage to gain support for his Cabinet? Or will he have to pass the mandate to Simeon Saxe-Coburg? And if that happens, what price would Simeon have to pay for the support of the right wing?

We were expecting answers today. All that emerged were just more questions.
