Health: Recognizing Bulimia

Society | July 22, 2005, Friday // 00:00

Bulimia, a psychological eating disorder, often starts with excessive weight concerns that might seem harmless.

But the disease is a dangerous one and in severe cases can lead to heart problems and even heart attack. Other risks include teeth problems and stomach ulcers.

How to tell whether you or someone close to you might have bulimia?

This condition is characterized by episodes of binge-eating followed by purging, vomiting, fasting, excessive use of laxatives and diuretics, or compulsive exercising.

Depression, mood swings, weakness and irregular periods could signal bulimia. Patients also tend to frequently use the toilet after meals.

Treat the bulimia sufferer with care, patience and understanding. Be prepared for denial or even aggression.

Your friend or family member should see a medical expert.
