In the beginning of July 2005 Bulgaria's capital Sofia has once again bathed in piles of uncollected garbage. The flashy windowpanes of downtown stores reflect the decomposing waste outside. Centimeter-thick glass separates Armani and Versace couture from the potential contamination foci on the streets.

In short, Sofia has turned into a pigsty. However, there are no pearls and diamonds shining in the mud. That is to say, a sensible solution to the problem has not yet emerged on the horizon. The Suhodol garbage dump has not been closed in spite of promises.

The one most blamed for the situation has left office to move to yet another livestock breeding facility. He has announced that by leaving his position of pigsty head he has "deprived" his accusers of charging grounds. Alas, the absurd of these words displayed itself clearly. For how is one to manage a whole farm if he is not able to deal effectively with a single part of it. But that is yet another issue to discuss.

The garbage problem tends to grow in dimension. No one wants a waste disposal site in their yard. And they are ready to protest at the cost of an ecological and epidemic disaster.

Except that they are not the ones to blame. Neither are Sofia citizens, for aspiring towards a life without heaps of trash to wallow in. Yet a way out has to be found.

But if the farm heads have decided to turn part of Bulgaria's population into the kind of omnivores mentioned above, they should remain wide awake.

A bright man called George Orwell once wrote a tiny book called "Animal Farm." It might make a useful though unpleasant reading for those aspiring to play the part of the main human character, Mr. Jones. For it is a dejected part indeed.

The book has many morals. Yet Mr. Jones wannabes might want to draw from it a lesson on pig character. For the simple reason that Orwellian pigs possess high intelligence-a brainpower with the ability to destruct.
