It is possible that Bulgaria sees a wave of new local elections at some of largest cities, if leaders of winning parties per respective constituencies - who are currently mayors - decided to take on an MP chair.

Sofia Mayor Stefan Sofianski, who has won a difficult battle two years ago for a third mandate, did not rule out definitely the possibility to enter the parliament.

The coalition of Bulgarian People's Union, part of which is Sofianski's Union of Free Democrats, has managed to survive the narrow 4% threshold at this year's elections earning 5.2% of votes, according to interim results. Sofianski ran on the coalition tickets of BNS in two constituencies - Varna and 24-th of Sofia.

Another probable municipal head to ponder over an MP-seat is Eleonora Nikolova, mayor of Russe. Her party United Democratic Forces (UtDF) stands chances for a mandate in the city on the Danube River.

If so, this will be the second case that the city's mayor "defects" to take on a higher position in the executive. Dimitar Kalchev also left the mayoral chair to become Minister of State Administration in the government of Simeon Saxe-Coburg.

Elections 2005 may suspend the fourth-in-a-row mayoral tenure of Venelin Uzunov, who is likely to enter the 40th parliament on the ticket of Bulgarian Socialist Party.

Razgrad is one of half a dozen constituencies in Bulgaria where the socialists have come second in votes after ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms.
