A third group from the Bulgarian national expedition to Antarctica will leave for the continent on January 14, the Director of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, Associate Professor Hristo Pimpirev announced. Pimpirev and two other scientists, Senior Research Associate Laszlo Klein (geologist) and Research Associate Nikola Krustev (geophysicist) will replace other members of the expedition who have been performing logistical tasks at the Bulgarian research base on Livingston Island. The “St. Kliment Ohridski” University base is currently accommodating the second group of Bulgarians. “The research programme after January includes geological studies of the metallic components in the rocks near the base,” Pimpirev said. The objective is to assess the availability of mineral resources in the area. The crew will also study the environmental impact of human activity in the cleanest part of the world. Prof. Dr. Hubert Miller and Dr. Stefan Kraus of Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich will be working together with the Bulgarian researcher. Earlier in the year, Bulgarians discovered fossils embedded in the rocks on Livingston Island, which will allow precise dating of the origin of the rocks.
