The unprecedented euphoria of the Bulgarian football fans before the encounter with Sweden has subsided.

The 3-0 thrashing and the Hungarian draw that followed cooled off people's enthusiasm and almost stripped the Bulgarian side of every chance for qualifying for the World Cup.

Still, Saturday's match against Croatia is crucial for the development of the team just the same. The tree points that Bulgaria has the chance to gain are not the key issue. A victory would help the coach, the players and the entire nation retrieve their hope that the Bulgarian football has entered a new era, and a better one.

The appointment of Hristo Stoitchkov, a legend of Bulgarian football and an icon for superpower Barcelona, signalled a bustle in Bulgaria's football passion. It came after the EURO 2004 flop with not a single win for the Bulgarians side. All seemed hopeless, fans were deeply disappointed, people were losing their interest in the game.

When Stoitchkov came into play as a coach, it was a splash. He seemed super confident and was all over the news, vowing to bring discipline, reassurance and victory. And he actually seemed to be trusted by everyone. It was obvious that the euphoria had crept upon even the most sceptical journalist, and no one felt like criticizing a single step by Bulgaria's new football mentor.

The Swedish bash, followed by Hungary's shocking last-gasp equalizer that deprived the Bulgarians of much-needed victory, threw cold water all over the feeling of football revival.

Now there is nothing but a question mark ahead of the team. Is it going up or is it going down? Are they able to shake off disappointment and muster strength and courage for the next big game? How efficient and motivated Hristo Stoitchkov really is?

The great player is still a hero for his fans. And if his squad would be victorious this weekend, Bulgaria will be back on track for the finals - even with the tough Swedes ahead.

They proved Stoitchkov is not invincible. But score is not all about numbers. It is also about spirit and the ability to stand up on your feet after a bad bump.

This makes Saturday's qualifier not just another game, but the decisive one for Hristo Stoitchkov's coaching career.
