The Finance Minister Milen Velchev is still considering the remission of the Bulgarian Railways Company’s (BDZ) debts, Transport Minister Plamen Petrov, announced. According to him the negotiations between the two ministries have been accelerated. A total of BGN 130 M are BDZ ‘s liabilities, BGN 35 M of them is the debt to the National Electricity Company. According to Minister Petrov a new evaluation of the company’s assets will be initiated. The larger part of the company’s debts are to the state. Minister Petrov said that he insists on remitting the debt because of the future restructuring of the company into an infrastructure and carriage company. The 2002 state subsidy for State Railways Company totals BGN 70 M. Minister Petrov also cited the inability of the Company to pay its debt being in such a bad financial state. According to data of the Ministry of Transport and Communications the company’s losses till September 30, 2001 amount to about BGN 100 M.
