HOLY SYNOD SEEKS PM'S COOPERATION

Politics | December 11, 2001, Tuesday // 00:00

The meeting of Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg with delegation of the Holy Synod on December 11 continued for more than an hour. Maxim, the Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and the metropolitans suggested that the laws adopted ten year ago that led to schism in the church, be revoked. In the opinion of the Patriarch the schism will be put an end to when the church gets back all estates that have been seized – churches, monasteries, factories, accounts and deposits. The Holy Synod also sought the Prime Minister’s cooperation in affirming the present status of the Synod. According to the Patriarch there won’t be any future registration because it has already been done in the right time. According to the Supreme Administrative Court definition of October 18, 2000 in the Republic of Bulgaria there are two religious communities in Bulgaria called Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The Prime Minister has committed himself to no concrete engagements.
