Bulgarians Dump Electricity for Firewood

Politics | April 21, 2005, Thursday // 00:00

Swelling electricity prices in Bulgaria have led to resurgence in firewood heating, a report has shown.

Over 1997-2003, the electricity share in household heating has decreased from 38% to 34.7%, according to data from the national energy efficiency programme.

The firewood share has shot up from 8% to 26%.

Experts commented that the reason for that tendency was the drastic increase in electricity cost.

It has almost tripled during the period in question, starting from BGN 0.06/ kwh to reach BGN 0.17.
