History has given many examples of how a man's weakness can stain the image of an entire nation.

Germany is still paying off a humanitarian debt to the world after the Adolph Hitler savagery. Joseph Stalin's cruelty and megalomania have become a sad but still inevitable association to the name Russia. And for many Western people the Ceausescu-triggered cultural and economic disaster is still the only thing they know about Romanian history.

When one is sharing state power in whatever country, they should always think about things like consequences and responsibility. At some point, a bad move could turn out to be a heavy burden to millions of people.

Such a misfortunate international scenario ran this week with Bulgaria's Dobrin Mitev in the center of attention.

Mitev used to be the governor of the main Bulgarian port (1997-2000) and a local Democratic leader. Last March, the court in his city of Varna sentenced him to five years in jail because of misusing his power while in office. The jurors found him guilty on three charges or misappropriating state-owned land and real estates.

Yet that was not the most disturbing fact in this story. Because at the time when the sentence was passed the young politician was long gone...to New Zealand.

An international operation for hunting him down had to be launched, and it was not until Wednesday that Interpol arrested him in Australia.

Yes, there are other states besides Bulgaria where some of the officials are corrupt. Inefficient, disliked. It is a pity - but most of the times not enough to trigger an international scandal. Swindle is something everyone should be ashamed of. But it is human to make mistakes. Being honest, admitting you've made a bad move and facing the consequences is a big step ahead to regaining dignity.

And a chance for your country to recoup its own.

There is no turning back, however, if you choose to run away to another part of the world instead. Many people regarded Mitev's flight to signal a political mess in Bulgaria, a sign for reigning dishonesty and for a primitive mentality.

Going international turned a single man's mistakes into a problem for the whole of Bulgaria.

In New Zealand, for example, where the notorious Bulgarian has been residing over the last several years, there are probably people who didn't know anything about Bulgaria. Until now.

Let us hope that the moral of this story would not fade away unnoticed by the rest of Bulgaria's political elite. It is always better to be honest and try to make it up for any mess you might have made. And give your country a chance to come out clean.
