BALKAN GRAIN EXCHANGE TO BE SET UP

A Balkan Grain Exchange will be set up, Hristo Milenkov, Executive Director of the Sofia Commodity Exchange, announced in the Black Sea resort of Albena on December 7. The project will be funded by the American Agency for International Development. The aim of the Exchange is the establishment of a single market that will coordinate prices. According to a study of the World Bank in Bulgaria some 80% of the turnover in agriculture bypasses the official market. Commodity Exchange statistics shows that some 175,000 t of grain have been exported in 2001 against 400,000 t for the same period last year. Experts claim that Bulgarian wheat should be offered on the international markets at USD 75 per ton if it is to be competitive
