The Bulgarian civil aviation suffered USD 120 M losses in 2001 because of its withdrawal from regular international lines after the collapse of the National Carrier Balkan Airlines, the Air Transport Institute (ATI) report shows. Svetoslav Stanoulov, ATI’s manager, presented the paper at a conference on the Bulgarian aviation future that took place on December 7. According to the report Bulgarian carriers’ shares on the international transport market dropped from 60% - 70 % to 20%, which equals a total of 200,000 - 300,000 less passengers in one year. 230 pilots have emigrated, while the traffic to internal destinations has shrunk ten times since 1990.
