The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has shown interest in the development of the Belene nuclear plant project, it emerged after the meeting of Bulgarian Energy Minister Miroslav Sevlievski and IMF mission leader for Bulgaria Hans Flickenschild.

The project is planned as a public private partnership with state-sponsored guarantees not to exceed the minority state-owned stake in the company, Minister Sevlievski told Flickenshild.

Incumbents plan to vote the proposal of construction of two nuclear units at the Belene plant by the end of mandate of the current governmernt, MP from the ruling majority and chief of parliamentary Energy Commission Vesselin Bliznakov said also on Saturday.

The international financial watchdog was introduced to the results from the power plants privatisation and pledged to stick to its current policy of financial discipline in Bulgarian energy utilities.

Hans Flickenschild has headed IMF's one-week mission to the country since March 9. The current mission is expected to complete the first review of the two-year precautionary agreement between Bulgaria and the Fund signed in August 2004.
