Parliament adopted a bill on the operation of the National Audit Office at second reading on December 4. The National Audit Office (NAO) will audit the National Health Insurance Fund, the public social security system, the use of money provided by EU funds and programs, including the management of the funds by the respective institutions and the end-consumers, and the proceeds from the privatisation and the award of concession contracts. NAO will send the audit reports on the EU funding use to the European audit authority and to the European Commission. The government will not be allowed to alter NAO's budget parameters but will only expressed its opinion before Parliament. NAO annual budget report and the annual audit report will be audited by an independent committee appointed by parliament by March 31 of the current year. The NAO chairperson and 10 members will be required to have master's degrees; the chairperson and the members of the office will be required to have a working experience of at least 15 or 10 years, respectively. The NAO chairperson will receive a salary equal to 90% of that of the parliamentary speaker.
