World opera celebrity Luciano Pavarotti has been invited to stage a performance in Bulgaria, but the requested EUR 800,000 fee makes the gig rather unlikely, press reported Friday.

The Sofia Municipality has been negotiating a possible summertime gig with the tenor's manager, Trud daily wrote. According to the article, the initial fee was set at EUR 300,000. Pavarotti's office then raised the fee to more than double.

Metodii Petrikov, the head of Sofia's cultural department, was cited as saying that the large sum was far beyond what the Municipality can afford.

The performance would have taken place at the Vassil Levski Stadium in the capital city, or at Sofia Airport.
