US OFFICIAL CLAIMS THAT BULGARIA IS A LEADING NATO CANDIDATE

Bulgaria is a leading, of primary importance candidate for NATO membership, acting US Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage told Foreign Minister Passy during a meeting in Washington. Armitage currently acts as Secretary of State in the absence of Colin L. Powell who is on a European tour. The American official gave positive assessment to the Bulgarian foreign politics and expressed his opinion that in case that Bulgaria continues to follow that trend, it will receive invitation for NATO membership at the forum in Prague in 2002. Armitage thanked on behalf of the United States for the bilateral military agreement on US troops overflight, transit passage and stay on Bulgarian territory.
