Bulgarian Big-Bang for Eurovision

The homeland of Orpheus will send a national contestant in the Eurovision contest - for the first time in its 50 years of history. Hip-hip-hurrah!

The state television opens pre-selection round, teams up some of the best singers, musicians, and music gurus in the jury panel, who eventually short-list the twelve most prospective SONGS to compete for the final domestic round.

And then ...

Bing! Press media spread rumours of tendentious organization of the rivalry hideously giving backup to the popular talk-show anchor Slavi Trifonov. His duet with singer Sofi Marinova hit the headlines for at least two weeks that made him a good reason to dwell on the topic live in his show.

Slavi was the only one out of all finalists to have openly talked of his Eurovision participation from the TV and defend his duet ... while unofficial preliminary results showed Slavi-Sofi were ahead in the SMS voting.

Bang! The dream night - once in a lifetime for each of the participants - came in and brought out ... the scandal! Slavi Trifonov and Sofi Marinova refused to sing announcing the winner was pre-targeted and claiming the final results were rigged.

He was eventually right - the young marvels of Kaffe would win anyway with the crushing 52% of votes sent by fans throughout the country against the second place of less than 30% for Slavi and his rich-voiced companion.

Despite pledging this was "fake ballot" and "rivalry of SMS, not of songs", his open accusations to the contest organizers staked Bulgaria's first ever participation in Eurovision on the hurt self-esteem of one popular face. Music colleagues and spectators were, mildly to say, left dumbfound after instead of singing Slavi read a declaration the contest was bought out and voting was rigged by massively sent SMS in support of their "friends" from Kaffe.

I would not dare suggest what thoughts stormed through the minds of Kaffe's six at that moment. They might have visualized how half of finalists were swept by Slavi & Sofi's doubts and also refused to sing live, which might have ruined the rivalry. Or how the audience woes and boos and leaves the concert hall.

But everybody stayed until the end of the concert. And people watching TV stayed in front of their sets at home - and kept on voting.

After Kaffe did win with a sweeping majority - as meantime results were showing and everybody could see - there remained the sour taste of something rotten, of unjustified jealousy and limitless efforts to produce a shattering Big-Bang to be heard far away, there in Kiev, where Eurovision would take place anyway.
