On Wednesday the leaders of the Bulgarian ruling Simeon II National Movement (SIINM) party met distinguished political science authorities to discuss the location of SIINM on country's political scene.

At the politologists' briefing that followed it became clear that the discussion, named "Political center and its identification in the public consciousness" had nothing to do with last week's dramatic non-confidence vote events, as it had been appointed almost two months ago.

The main questions raised at the meeting, according to Daniel Vulchev, SIINM Deputy Chairman, was what was the meaning of political center in Bulgaria, can SIINM be called a centrist party, and would it be for party's benefit to determine its own status.

As often, the questions asked were more than the answers given. As a whole the political scientists shared the opinion that the ruling party had walked a long way from being a movement to becoming a party and all of them agreed that "centrist" definition fits best to the ruling party.

As Andrey Raichev said, SIINM ended up in the political center not by intent, but by result. The bipolar model heating white-hot the leftist-rightist friction during the transition period aroused the need of a balanced and moderate center. By stepping on the political scene Simeon's movement willy-nilly filled in the centrist hole in the political space, and bit-by-bit it started adopting a centrist party's functions. This allowed the young party to evolve much more quickly than the rest of the political forces in the country, he concluded.

This transformation was appraised positively by the experts. As Dimitar Avramov said, a stable political center in all cases would have a good effect on Bulgaria's development, being an open door for discussions with both rightists and leftists.
The political center should have liberal identity, according to Avramov.

The experts were unanimous that SIINM will continue its development as a center-oriented party. They were also at one that the party would surely be a part of Bulgaria's next government. The time is yet to show exactly to what extent.
