Parliament will be the place to watch this week. Beheaded after the dismissal of its speaker, it is to see the country-wide confidence vote that former king Simeon Saxe-Coburg gained during 2001 elections turn into a non-confidence one by Friday at the latest.

The vote of the non-confidence motion will pinnacle a crisis that got unleashed last week and put side by side Bulgaria's political arch enemies - die-hard right-wingers and die-hard socialists.

But there is more to what meets the eye in this unlikely unity of the opposition and anybody can tell you that.

Yet it's anybody's guess what will happen after this week.

The prospect of an interim cabinet sends shivers down the spine of local right-wingers, as this would put into office the left-wingers before even holding elections, which, anyway, they are most likely to win.

Media even hinted that this prospect was the reason for US President George Bush to call and vow his support for Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg last week. (It sounds more plausible, however, that President Bush vowed support for Bulgaria, one of his staunchest allies over the last years, and not the leader of its ruling party.)

All scenarios are possible - the government may step down, with the opposition picking a cabinet of experts or an interim cabinet option, or ... the incumbents may survive.

Whatever the denouement this week, be prepared for more wrangling and haggling - another reminder of the chronic shortage of unity the country suffers from. In stark contrast to local politicians' rhetoric.
