Ognyan Gerdzhikov, professor of civil and commercial law, was elected chairman of the 39th National Assembly July 5, 2001.

He headed the fifth parliament since the beginning of democratic changes in 1989. He entered politics and parliament as a member of the Simeon II National Movement.

In 1971 he graduated from the Law School of the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. Since 1979 he has been a lecturer at the Law School of the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. He became consecutively Senior Assistant, Chief Assistant, Associate Professor and Professor. He specialized at the University of Vienna and the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg.

He has guest-lectured and has delivered reports at the Jagielonski University in Krakow, the Europa Institute in Saarbruecken, the Geneva University, the Max Planck Institute and the Chamber of Commerce in Hamburg.

Professor Gerdzhikov has worked as First Deputy Dean of the Law School of the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia (1991-1993). Since 1993 to 1994 he has been Deputy Rector of the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia (1993-1994). In 1996 to 2000 Gerdhzikov headed the St. Kliment Ohridski Foundation (1996-2000).

He has also been Mmember of the Social Sciences Commission at the Higher Attestation Commission at the Council of Ministers (1997-2000) and Chairman of the Arbitration Court at the Bulgarian Industrial Association (since 1999).
