Senior government officials in charge of science of six Balkan countries participate in a two-day informal meeting in Sofia that opened on December 2. Science Ministers of Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina and representatives of Romania and Albania participate in the meeting. The Bulgarian Education and Science Minister Vladimir Atanassov expressed the hope that the participants will find an answer to what he described as "the most painful concern:" funding science and scientific research. "I hope we will soon have a Balkan map of student and scientists mobility," Atanassov added. The forum is held in preparation for a Balkan meeting of ministers of science in 2002, with participation of EU Member States as well.
