Adriana Bancheva, who won the international open contest for a logo for the Decade of Roma Inclusion, is Creative Director at Bulgaria's leading PR company M3 Communications Group Inc.. She has a Master's degree from Poster Design at the National Academy of Arts, Sofia. Adriana had graduated from Professional school of Polygraphy & Photography and studied two years at the University of Forestry & Engineering.

Her logo was selected among some 24 entries from companies and individual artists from different countries.

Adriana Bancheva talked to SNA Editor Petya Bondokova

Q: What does the logo symbolize?

A: A logo needs to speak for itself. In some way, the essence of the idea that it has captured needs to be there on a subconscious level.

This logo is meant to express the idea of Roma minorities being open to the rest of the world, and the world being open to the Roma's. That is the meaning of the concentric circles, which are left open at one side - the pro-active position of Roma groups and other communities to each other.

Q: What are the main criteria for the logo of such international campaign?

A: In any case it has to measure up to very high standards.

The very reason to have a logo is that the graphic language is universal. I wouldn't call it an Esperanto, but it is something similar. It has one meaning to people of every ethnic background, nationality, and language group.

The logo needs to have an international meaning, and still to indicate clearly that it is about minority groups.

Q: What does winning this contest mean to you?

A: I see it as a success for me more as a person rather than as a designer. The most important thing is not that I designed a logo and it won this contest, and will be the symbol of the entire campaign. I feel satisfied with the fact that I contributed in my own way to the whole idea, which is love for humanity, fighting egoism, etc..

Q: How much time did you need to create the logo?

A: I didn't take much time. The truth is that I was not sure whether I would be able to participate until the very last moment. I created the winning logo one single evening. I remember being ill at that time, but in the end decided it was important to take part.

Q: What will be your further participation in the initiative?

A: I hope to find a very concrete way of participating. The willingness for taking part itself is important, of course. The thoughts focused on love and understanding are always some sort of participation.

I think that a great number of foundations and state institutions will take specific steps for boosting the initiative.

I have this idea for M3 Communications Group, Inc. to found a scholarship for educating Roma students in the field of fine arts. I really want to find the right person to whom to allot that scholarship, and we are looking for him.
