The chief of protocol of Pope John Paul II, Mgr. Renato Bocardo, and the Apostolic Nuncio in Bulgaria Antonio Mennini had meetings with Maxim, the Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and with the Chief Mufti of Bulgarian Muslims Selim Mehmed on November 27.The envoys informed the heads of the two largest religious denominations in Bulgaria of the upcoming visit of Pope John Paul II. Statements of mutual respect and appreciation were exchanged. Patriarch Maxim said he would be happy to receive the Pope in the Synodal Palace. The envoys assured the Chief Mufti of the Pope’s warm feelings for him. They underscored the importance he would have during the Pope’s visit. According to the envoys the Pope plans to hold joint services for all religious communities on December 14, the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan, and January 24, the birthday of St. Francis, as an act of peace and understanding among believers.
