Bulgaria's Dr. Latchezar Avramov is among this year's nominees for the EU Descartes Prize for outstanding research through transnational co-operation.

A total of eight teams, which include scientists of over 20 countries EU members, as well as Bulgaria, Switzerland and the US are competing for the prize this year.

The team of the Bulgarian scientists is nominated for in the Engineering field for their project Aplomb. The key objective of the project is the development of efficient photon detectors to measure low intensity luminescence.

The approach commenced with detailed theoretical modelling of cathode performance, using data from new experimental methods to derive the dielectric constants of cathode materials. Theoretical modelling of structured cathodes and optical interactions indicated methods to improve sensibility.

This year, the EU Descartes Prize for outstanding research through transnational co-operation is celebrating its fifth anniversary. The 2004 short-listed teams come from 20 countries and display scientific excellence in the fields of life sciences, engineering, information technologies, chemistry and physics.

The two winners of this year's award - which is worth EUR 1million, will be announced on 2 December in Prague.
