BELGIAN OFFICIAL IN BULGARIA TO OBSERVE PROGRESS

Pierre Chevalier, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives of the Belgian Parliament is on an official visit to Bulgaria in connection with the European Union report on the progress of the eighteen EU applicant states. The report was commissioned by the Prime Minister of Belgium, the country currently holding EU rotating presidency. Pierre Chevalier met Ognyan Gerdhzikov, Bulgarian Parliament Speaker. The two officials discussed the role of national parliaments in the structures of the European Union. Gerdzhikov underscored that all Bulgarians and parliamentary forces favor Bulgaria’s accession to the EU and NATO. He pointed out that a program on harmonizing the Bulgarian with European legislation is under way. Recent presidential elections results were discussed at the meeting of Pierre Chevalier with Stanimir Ilchev, Chairman of the Parliament Committee on Foreign Policy, Defense and Security. Ilchev assured Chevalier that President elect Georgi Purvanov will work for Bulgaria’s future membership in EU and NATO.
