The Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel reacted positively to the proposal of the French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine, Bulgaria to join the European Union with the first round of accession. Michel added that the French proposal will result in many positive discussions. France will support Bulgaria’s accession to the European Union with the first ten candidate countries, French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine implied in his address to the foreign and defense ministers of the EU member and candidate countries at their meeting in Brussels. “Bulgaria and Romania may be destabilized in case that they do not join the EU with the first accession round,” Vedrine said. He reiterated that the fact that the European Union will accept ten more countries is shocking enough: thus,Bulgaria's and Romania's accession will not have a big influence in case that they become members of the EU next year. Belgium is the European Union presidency holder this year. German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder commented on the French proposal that no political points are to be conceded to the EU candidate countries. He reiterated that the candidate countries should join the European Union depending on the political and economic situation in the particular states. Poland also expressed its discontent with the proposal.
