Many people touched by the performance of great Bulgarian basso Nikolay Ghiaurov attended the special concert to mark the 75th anniversary since the birth of the late basso.

A special commemoration concert took place in Sofia on Monday, organized by the National Opera and Ballet. It was held under the patronage of President Georgi Parvanov.

Bulgarian, Greek and Italian musicians performed Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem, which was one of Ghiaurov's favourite masterpieces. Ghiaurov's son - Vladimir Ghiaurov, who has also gained world fame, conducted the concert.

Opera soprano singer Mirella Freni arrived in Sofia Sunday, and will join events organized to mark 75 years since her late husband.

Ghiaurov, 73, died June 2 in an Italian hospital after an illness. He lived for years in Italy's Modena together with his wife, Mirella Freni.
